Nobody owes you anything

Does that title make you defensive?

I know that years ago it definitely would have made me feel that way.

“What do you mean nobody owes me anything? Don’t you know how long I worked on that?! I’ve worked so hard and nothing is happening! Why is nobody buying??”

If that sounds at all like you, you need this post.

Today’s title actually came from a longer excerpt of a book I just read the other day.

It went something like this:

“Nobody owes you anything. In fact, you are the one that owes the world and the people in it. You take up space (physical and emotional) so you better have something good to show for it.”

Now that is powerful.

And what a giant shift in perspective!

So many people live their life upset, disappointed, and mad because they haven’t made this shift.

Because they are always expecting something from others (as if they’re owed it) they are constantly being let down.

But what if we do make that shift? What would that look like?

It would mean a focus on giving (without expecting anything in return)

It would mean coming out of every experience with something positive to say (because you were either blessed by some amazing unexpected result or you learned something).

And it would mean detaching yourself from any outcome so that you are free to be honest, genuine, and focus on adding value.

Speaking of adding value, if your goal is truly to add value to other people and you do that every day, it will come back to you in one way or another.

So make that your goal and know (but don’t expect) that it will come back to you.
